British PM of Indian Origin

Probing The Excitement in India Over a British PM of Indian Origin

There is great excitement in India over Rishi Sunak of Indian origin becoming the new British PM. It is also seen as one, the defeat of British colonialism and two, that history has been awarded with justice.

But why are Indians so excited? Is it because Rishi Sunak is the new British PM of Indian Origin? Or the British democracy is so matured that any British citizen can become the PM there irrespective of their family connections, origin, country, race and religion. My question is, are the people of India overwhelmed with joy due to the new British PM Rishi Sunak is of Indian Origin and thereby celebrating the merits and attributes of a matured British democracy? Is their happiness an expression to convey that Indian democracy should also learn from British democracy to follow suit? Do we have the same desire to celebrate our democracy in the same spirit we are so excited about British democracy – especially in a country where fear is created about the increase in the population of a particular community!!!  Insecurity is created in India in the name of population control law.  By taking the help of wrong data, it is said that soon the majority community will become a minority and a minority will become a majority. Therefore the country and the majority community  are in danger. There is a celebration in the country that the Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, who calls himself a Hindu, has become the Prime Minister of Christian-majority Britain. So can this question be asked from the politics of India whether such generosity and liberal attitude can be expected from India? Apart from citizens of minority communities, can even any citizen of India of non Indian origin become the PM of India? In 2004 the nation witnessed the drama of the team BJP that included late Sushma Swaraj, Uma Bharati and even Modi who all vehemently objected Sonia Gandhi to become PM of India and went to the shameless extent of calling her "videshi vidhwa."

Rishi Sunak from Hindu minority community became the PM of the UK which is a Christian majority country. Sunak proudly calls himself a Hindu and swears on Gita for the oath of Prime Minister. He is free from discrimination and a sense of insecurity.

I am not saying that racialism has died forever in the UK or even in the USA. It is still there but one can see the change. There was a time when Churchill once said "Indians are not fit to rule, they are fit to be ruled….. Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters. All Indian leaders will be of low caliber and men of straw. They have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight among themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabble."  This was a typical mindset of a leader from Conservative Tory.

Even Sunak is also from the same Conservative party. But one can see the growth in British democracy ever since, especially in the last 30-40 years. It could promote and groom promising minorities into politicians. The British gave Rishi Sunak the opportunity to contest as an MP from an assured conservative Richmond (York) seat after it was vacated by William Hague. Not like in India a minority candidate is never seriously given a seat for assured win, leave aside bringing a minority PM face. The finance minister in the UK is known as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Even this important position has been with the minority MP Rishi Sunak. Sunak's predecessor was Sajid Javid and now successor Nadhim Zahawi.

There is a tradition of Prime Minister's Question Time known as "Open Question" in the British Parliament. The Prime Minister answers questions from MPs in the House of Commons every sitting Wednesday. The PM is not served with pre written questions. The questions are extempore. Our PM needs to learn from this. He does not even call a press conference. So the more we talk about the current British temperament the more we will unlayer the duplicity in Indian politics.

Rishi Sunak is mentioned in the British media as being of Indian origin and a Hindu, but there is no noise anywhere that when Britain is going through economic devastation, surrounded by fear of war, then why such a person became the PM of the UK, who is not of British origin. This man would put UK's security at risk especially when inflation in UK is at a high level.

Sunak comes from the richest financial background with a personal net worth of more than Rs 7000 crore. His wife's financial status is also not less. Moreover he comes from such an elite business class for whom personal finance still matters a lot even if it concerns savings or managing taxes. Imagine the finance minister who taxed heavily to crush his people is more careful on personal savings and on taxes. To avail the tax benefit in the UK he did not even surrender his US Green Card!!!

Keeping his background apart, Rishi Sunak's hands are tight with business. He has to deliver. He has to ride his country through an acute economic crisis. He may be a Hindu and of Indian origin. For him "British first" is going to be his top priority.
