DAY 5 Fifa World Cup 2022: Favourites Brazil Kick Off

 DAY 5

Fifa World Cup 2022: Favourites Brazil kick off tournament bid as Portugal enter fray

In the match Portugal Vs Ghana, Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal survived a scare against Ghana; the West African team gave their fans something to cheer when Andre Ayew equalized, and Osman Bukari's 89th-minute header set up an anxious ending.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo shrugged off his bitter split with Manchester United to claim yet another record as he became the first player to score in five World Cups with a penalty to help steer his side to a nervy 3-2 win over Ghana on Thursday.

Ghana did nothing in the first half apart from defend deeply but gave their noisy bank of fans in the 974 Stadium something to cheer when Andre Ayew equalized in the 73rd minute.

Joao Felix restored Portugal's lead five minutes later, however, and Bruno Fernandes then showed his class with a jinking run before sliding a pass to Rafael Leao to leave Ghana stunned. Osman Bukari's 89th-minute headed reply set up an anxious ending for Portugal.

Favourites Brazil began their bid to win a sixth World Cup on Thursday when they took on Serbia, while Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to put his acrimonious departure from Manchester United behind him, as Portugal enter the fray against Ghana.

Richarlison’s stunning double sinks Serbia to get Brazil up and running. The match had three distinct periods. In period one Brazil started pretty tamely, perhaps even uncertainly, picking away at Serbia with tempo but not a great deal of poise. As the second half progressed they began to warm to the task, cathartically breaking the deadlock with a goal from Richarlison. In the final half hour they simply cut loose: riotous skills, relentless waves of attack and an early goal of the tournament contender from Richarlison, who scored his second with an outrageous bicycle kick, more like an acrobatic of a professional gymnast.

In the first match of the day Switzerland took over Cameroon 1-0 win. Breel Embolo’s emotional goal edges Switzerland past wasteful Cameroon. Breel Embolo grew up in Basel but he was born in Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé, and did not receive Swiss citizenship until eight years ago. That explains why the Monaco forward refrained from celebrating one of the simplest, yet potentially most significant, goals he will ever score.

The Uruguay and South Korea match ended in a goalless draw.

Uruguay hit the post twice, and South Korea missed one fine opportunity, but neither side did enough to win a fourth goalless draw of the tournament.

Uruguay came closer to scoring, hitting the woodwork twice, but Uijo should also have scored for Korea; the truth is neither side showed enough quality to score, and Group H looks like being a tighty.

That was all in four games on day 5 of FIFA WC 2022 worth commenting on.
